Summer Aid
Students who receive financial aid during the regular school year and anticipate enrolling for a summer session should plan their budget ahead of time. The more federal direct loan funds a student borrows during the Fall and Spring semesters, the fewer loan funds will be available for the Summer session.
At Shenandoah, the summer term is considered a trailer to the academic year award cycle for all students except for those listed below. Students applying for Summer 2025 financial aid must have completed the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for the 2024-2025 academic year. A FAFSA is not required if you are borrowing a private loan. There are two exceptions to this requirement:
- Students enrolled in the Accelerated Second Degree Nursing program who are on target to graduate in December 2025 and are enrolling in their 3rd semester of their program must complete a 2025-2026 FAFSA to receive federal financial aid for the Summer semester.
- Students enrolled in the Pharmacy program who are on target to graduate in May 2026 and are enrolling in their Summer APPEs must complete a 2025-2026 FAFSA to receive federal financial aid for the Summer semester
Undergraduate dependent students who have borrowed the annual loan limit for the Federal Direct Loans during the Fall and Spring semesters and who are enrolled in a least 6 credits for the summer term, may have their parent(s) borrow a Federal Direct Parent PLUS Loan. You would also have the option of applying for a private student loan if preferred. Independent undergraduate students have the option of applying for private student loans for the summer term if needed. Graduate students enrolled in at least 3 credits for the summer term have the option of applying for a Graduate PLUS Loan or a private student loan as needed.
Students should inform the Shenandoah University Office of Financial Aid if they received financial aid from another school during the academic year.
Apply for Summer 2025 Aid
Application opens mid-Spring 2025
- Register for classes. To receive financial aid for the summer term, including federal loans, students must enroll at least half time in an approved program of study (six credit hours for undergraduate students and three credit hours for graduate students) during the term in which they will receive the financial aid.
- Submit the FAFSA. Students must submit the 2024-2025 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) if not submitted already.
- Complete the Summer Application with detailed information regarding the class, term start date and number of credits. Submit the Summer Financial Aid application to finaid@bjlanjia.com.
- Review Hornet Hub and accept any federal loans that may have been awarded. Students will receive an email notification once their Summer loan offerings are listed on Hornet Hub.
- Complete Entrance Counseling (EC). Students who have been awarded a federal direct loan must complete Entrance Counseling if they have not already done so. http://studentaid.gov/entrance-counseling/
- Sign the Master Promissory Note (MPN). Students who have been awarded a federal direct loan or parents borrowing a federal Direct PLUS loan must sign the Master Promissory Note if they have not already done so. http://studentaid.gov/mpn/
- Apply for PLUS or Private loans as needed. Students must adjust the date range on their loan application to May, 2025 – August, 2025. If applying for a specific amount in PLUS loans, students should factor in the 4.228% PLUS loan origination fee.
- Note enrollment changes. Students must be enrolled at least half-time for a federal direct loan to disburse. If a student withdraws from all classes before completing 60 percent semester attendance, financial aid eligibility must be recalculated based on the federal Return of Title IV Funds formula.
- Sign up for Direct Deposit. When financial aid funds exceed university charges, students receive refunds. Direct Deposit bank authorization of a refund is faster, easier and more secure than mail delivery of a paper check. Direct Deposit bank information must be completed in Hornet Hub. If a student has previously signed up for direct deposit, no additional information is needed unless there have been changes to their bank account.
